At the stroke of midnight on March 6 1957, Ghana’s Black Star flag replaced Britain’s Union Jack at Parliament House in Accra. “We are no longer a British colony. We are free!” proclaimed the newly independent state’s first Prime Minister, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, to a jubilant crowd. “We are going to see that we create our own African personality and identity.”
