35 YEARS AGO DELE GIWA WAS KILLED
35 years ago on this day the Nigerian journalist and founder of the weekly newsmagazine “Newswatch” was killed by a parcel bomb.
Why he died.
“According to rumors on the streets of Lagos; Dele Giwa the founder of the Nigerian news magazine ‘Newswatch’ had found that a drug courier Gloria Okon who was supposed to be dead was alive and well in London. Dele Giwa interviewed her and found out that she used to carry hard drugs for Mariam Babangida. Dele Giwa came back to Nigeria but the State Security Service and the Directorate of Military Intelligence had been tipped off. Dele Giwa was harassed and accused of gun smuggling by the Directors of the SSS and the DMI. On October 19 while having breakfast, a despatch rider brought a parcel with the seal of the Nigerian President. Giwa must have been pleased that this must be from Babangida. When he opened it, a loud BOOM was heard.
Radical lawyer Gani Fawehinmi accused Kunle Togun the Director of the SSS and Halilu Akilu the Director of the DMI of complicity in the murder of Dele Giwa. The matter was taken to court and until today the killers have not been brought to justice.” From the book “The Ikoyi Prison Narratives”
