CHINA “KIDNAPS” CATHOLIC BISHOP

Read Time:52 Second

AsiaNews reports that Chinese authorities have taken Catholic Bishop Shao Zhumin of Whenzou on a “vacation”

This is not the first time the controversial bishop has been arrested since he was appointed bishop in 2016. When his predecessor Bishop Vincent Zhu Weifang who was imprisoned for 16 years died, Zhumin was arrested by police and taken on a “trip.” He was then detained by authorities several times after that.

In April and May 2017, Bishop Zhumin was arrested and detained for seven months and subjected to communist indoctrination. His appointment by the Vatican has not accepted by the Bishop Conference of China and the state controlled Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association.

Detention of clergy is common in China if they refuse to join the state run catholic association.

The “kidnaps” of religious leaders usually occur on the eve of important Catholic festivals such as Christmas, Easter, the Assumption, All Saints and All Souls Days. In recent years Chinese authorities have blocked the entrance to Wenzhou cemetery to prevent Catholics from congregating.
