Actor Will Smith apologises to Comedian Chris Rock on Instagram
Actor Will Smith who slapped the comedian Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony Sunday night in Los Angeles has apologised for his “unacceptable and inexcusable” act on Instagram.
The 53 year old Smith who picked up the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in “King Richard” slapped the comedian Rock after he joked about Jada, Smith’s wife. “Jada, I love you. G.I Jane, can’t wait to see it.” The audience laughed and Smith who was laughing at first got angry after his wife rolled her eyes. Will then went on stage, seen by millions all over the world and assaulted Rock.
“Wow..wow. Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me.” Rock responded and continued with the show. Returning to his seat, Smith shouted. “Get my wife’s name out your fucking mouth.” Which echoed round the world and broke the internet. Smith was then consoled by his fellow actor Denzel Washington who told him the Devil comes for you when you are at your highest.
‘Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,’ Smith wrote.
‘My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.’
‘I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.’
Smith then went on to say sorry to the organizers and the producers of the show. Rock has not responded to Smith’s apology, or commented on the Sunday night incident. While the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) announced it was not investigating the matter because Rock had declined to pursue criminal charges.
