China publishes white paper vowing reunification with Taiwan

The Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council and the State Council Information Office of China published a white paper titled “The Taiwan Question and China’s Reunification in the New Era” on Wednesday, following the tensions triggered by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s provocative visit to Taiwan island last week.

The white paper indicates Chinese resolve to reunify the disputed island with the mainland by force if necessary. It also serves as a warning to Taiwan authorities and the United States that China was now much stronger to solve the Taiwan question under any circumstance.

“Today, China has grown into the world’s second-largest economy. With significant growth in its political, economic, cultural, technological and military strength, there is no likelihood that China will allow Taiwan to be separated again.” The white paper stated.

“We are one China, and Taiwan is a part of China. This is an indisputable fact supported by history and the law. Taiwan has never been a state; its status as a part of China is unalterable,” says the white paper, noting that the CPC is committed to the historic mission of resolving the Taiwan question and realizing China’s complete reunification.

“The realization of complete national reunification is driven by the history and culture of the Chinese nation and determined by the momentum towards and circumstances surrounding our national rejuvenation,” the white paper stressed.

“Use of force would be the last resort taken under compelling circumstances. We will only be forced to take drastic measures to respond to the provocation of separatist elements or external forces should they ever cross our red lines,” the white paper said.

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command on Wednesday announced it will conduct regular combat readiness security patrols in the Taiwan Straits after declaring a successful conclusion of recent drills around the island, which experts said indicates that the PLA is ready for combat whenever national sovereignty and territorial integrity is threatened.

The aim of the combat readiness security patrols is to expel enemy planes and ships from Chinese territory. Combat readiness security patrol means that the PLA will conduct patrols with full combat readiness, for example, warplanes will be equipped with various missiles and the ships will be fully equipped with weapons and personnel according to experts.

Experts in Taiwan suggest that Beijing might be relying on the Peking Model. Show military strength and capabilities and hope Taipei surrenders. The 10 day fire drill which blockaded Taiwan was seen as the Peking Model, which refers to the PLA victory in 1949 when Nationalist forces the KMT surrendered to the Communists without a shot fired after the PLA encircled Peking (now Beijing) in 1949 and peacefully forced the KMT to surrender.
