Fuel Crisis Might Cancel Nigerian Elections

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission says the nagging fuel crisis will hamper logistics on Election Day plans to meet petrol supplier

The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Mahmood Yakubu plans to meet the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNCPL) to lay out plans for the supply of adequate fuel during the general elections. Yakubu made this known after a consultative meeting with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Abuja, Tuesday.

The electoral body chief warned that the fuel crisis will hamper the movement of voters, electoral officials and materials thereby delaying the vote and causing outright cancellation.

“The truth is that our arrangements may be negatively affected by the non-availability of products,” he said.

Yakubu added, “For this reason, the commission will this afternoon meet with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to look into ways to ameliorate the situation.”

He said the meeting was to design ways of ensuring adequate supply to prevent disruption of the general election so every Nigerian can cast their vote without the excuse of “no fuel.”

“I wish to assure Nigerians that we will continue to engage every national institution for the success of the 2023 General Election,” Yakubu said.

Nigeria has been suffering from fuel scarcity since last year, the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, (MOMAN), attributed the crisis to the high costs of vessels and inadequate trucks to deliver petroleum products from depots to filling stations across the country.

The marketers explained that these high cost of logistics and the fluctuating dollar exchange rate costs continue to cut their profit margins and they are left with no choice than to pass it to the consumer.
