Activists call for Obidients to boycott the Redeemed Christian Church of God for keeping silent following widespread electoral violence and rigging in Lagos

Activists backing the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi have called on democrats known as “Obidients” to boycott the largest Pentecostal church in Nigeria.

The clarion call was made following widespread rigging and electoral violence in the just concluded presidential and gubernatorial elections that saw the ruling party emerge victoriously.

The late founder of the RCCG Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi

The activist who goes by the name Olaudah Equiano with 56 thousand followers on Twitter, tweeted Sunday “If you are an Igbo man and you still attend RCCG, YOU ARE A FOOL.” Referring to the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) which has its headquarters in Lagos.

He criticised the church whose pastors include the All Progressive Congress (APC) Vice President of Nigeria Yemi Osinbajo, Senator Remi Tinubu the wife of the (APC) presidential candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC youth wing leader Dayo Israel for not condemning the attacks on the Igbo ethnic group during Saturday’s election in Lagos.

Adeboye popularly known as Daddy G.O

“Tell that to the political bigots that disenfranchised and suppressed Igbo and southern minority votes yesterday in Lagos. Those folks you worship and support. Hypocrites.” he tweeted in reply to a critic. The Lagos gubernatorial election turned into an ethnic tussle with some Yorubas going with the ruling APC to suppress the LP voters made up of Yorubas, Igbos and other ethnic minorities.

In the lead up to the election the APC governor Jide Sanwo Olu allowed Yoruba traditional masquerades to scare non Yorubas from voting that only a fraction of the 7 million registered voters appeared on Saturday.

Adding to the voter suppression, on Thursday in a video that went viral the APC enforcer in Lagos known as MC Oluomo, threatened those that won’t vote for the ruling party should stay at home or else.

The General Overseer of the RCCG Pastor Enoch Adeboye, 81, a Lagos resident has been silent giving the perception that he endorses the criminality of the ruling party.

He has been the General Overseer (most senior pastor) since 1981. The RCCG was founded in 1952 by Reverend Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi (1909–1980) following his involvement in the Anglican and the ethnic Celestial Church that caters for the Yorubas. How he became a reverend will never be known.

Adeboye was a mathematics lecturer at the University of Lagos having joined the church in 1973. Adeboye was initially hired as an interpreter to translate Akindayomi’s sermons from Yoruba to English. He was ordained a pastor of the church in 1975. His appointment as the leader (General Overseer) of the church was formalised by the posthumous reading of Akindayomi’s sealed pronouncement.

The church has 4,000 branches and five million members in Nigeria, in 80 countries with over $10 billion in estimated yearly revenue generated from tithes and offerings.
