Osinbajo Flies to London
Nigeria’s vice president flies to London to meet with the beleaguered “president-elect” while attending a Kings College lecture celebrating Africa Week
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has left Abuja for London to meet with the embattled “President-Elect” Bola Tinubu while attending a Kings College London lecture celebrating Africa Week. This was disclosed in a press statement, Sunday, by his media aide Laolu Akande.
Africa Week is an annual celebration of research, education and outreach activities in Africa.
Sources close to the vice president say that Osinbajo will be hosted as a special guest by the King’s College Africa Leadership Centre (ALC) and will confer with top officials of the prestigious institution ahead of his lecture and Nigerian officials from the diplomatic mission. One of the officials happens to be Tinubu who is currently in the British capital on R&R according to his aides but some other sources say he is undergoing medical treatment.
Osinbajo’s visit comes on the heels of the reported controversial meeting between the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and Tinubu last week.
Tinubu is beset with legal challenges to his victory in the presidential election which might potentially lead to an annulment. The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi had established that the ruling All Progressive Congress candidate forfeited $460,000 drug money to a US court therefore not eligible to contest for the presidency as stipulated by the constitution.
Osinbajo a thought and political leader is expected to present a paper on how Africa can prosper in an increasingly complex world.
The lecture is expected to follow the theme of King’s College Africa Week 2023— “Changing Africa in a Shifting Global Landscape”.
Both Tinubu and Osinbajo were contenders for the APC presidential ticket with the vice president losing in the primary and Tinubu emerging winner.
The vice-president is expected back in Nigeria at the end of the week.
