Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour opposition party’s gubernatorial candidate for Nigeria’s commercial capital submits petition challenging the “victory” of the ruling party
Nigeria’s Labour Party (LP) gubernatorial candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has filed his petition to the Lagos State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal. He requests that the tribunal void the outcome of the March 18 governorship election in the state, won by incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress(APC).
Rhodes-Vivour made this known in a viral tweet Tuesday.
“We have submitted a robust petition with a legal team composed of legal luminaries. We now look to and place our faith and fate in the Judiciary, The last hope of the common man. May God add to their wisdom and guide them towards justice. #Obidients #Ourlagos #itsPOssible” The tweet read.

Rhodes-Vivour, in his petition marked EPT/LAG/GOV/04/2023 dated April 9, 2023, urged the tribunal to nullify Sanwo-Olu’s victory on the alleged grounds that the APC candidate was not qualified to run in the election.
He also prayed that the tribunal declare him the duly elected governor of the state.
The LP candidate, in his petition, contended that Sanwo-Olu’s emergence as winner “was invalid by reason of corrupt practices or non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999. The second respondent was not duly elected by the majority of the lawful votes cast at the election.”
The March 18 gubernatorial poll saw voter intimidation, violence, manipulation of figures at the collation centre and ballot box theft which Sanwo-Olu won while Rhodes-Vivour was runner up.
Following the election, Rhodes-Vivour called on Lagos natives to speak up.
“There was no election, it was violence on multiple levels, diabolically and physically. On this ambition they sowed seeds that could potentially lead to outcome like the Rwandan genocide.”
“Lagosians, our enemies are not our neighbours or visitors, or fellow Lagosian with diverse tongues. Our common enemy is violence, insecurity, poverty, stagnation, corruption, and underdevelopment. It is these same people responsible for these, that have weaponised poverty and ethnicity to distract us from their evil endeavors and diabolical activities.” He stated.
“They have tried to destroy years of delicately balanced ethnic relations, years of inter-marriage and friendships, years of commerce, and years of building Lagos into the economic juggernaut that it is. I call on the silent majority, decent and cultured Lagosians, indigenous Lagosians and Lagosians at large to speak out.” Rhodes-Vivour stressed.
