Peter Pan Gone
Avatar of Nigerian journalism Peter “Pan” Enahoro dies in London opposition leader Peter Obi pays tribute saying he led the crusade for good governance
Peter Enahoro the former editor of the Nigerian Daily Times has died his family announced in a statement Tuesday.
The clipped statement reads: “Regret to announce the passing on of our iconic journalist, Peter Enahoro “Peter Pan”, in London, at the age of 88. RIP.
“Born on January 21, 1935, Peter Enahoro is a Nigerian journalist, author, businessman and publisher. Also known by the pen name of Peter Pan because of his popular column in New African Magazine under that name. He has been described as perhaps, Africa’s best known international journalist”.
Enahoro edited the Daily Times in 1962 and Sunday Times in 1958. He became the conglomerate’s administrator in 1996.
His family also said details of his burial will made public in due course.

In 1981, he launched a pan-African news magazine called Africa Now. His “Peter Pan” column that he began writing in 1959 ruffled feathers of the political Class. In an interview with Anote Ajeluorou of the Vanguard Saturday Magazine, Enahoro acknowledged fleeing Nigeria, aged 31 in the 1960s. This was unconnected to the 1966 Civil War. He returned in 1979 before leaving. Again, in 1990, he returned but was not comfortable with the political situation.
Frank Barton in his book The Press of Africa described Enahoro as “arguably Africa’s best journalist writing in the English language.

Enahoro authored four books throughout his career, How to be a Nigerian (1966), You Gotta Cry to Laugh (1972), The Complete Nigerian (1992) and Then Spoke the Thunder (2009).
Opposition leader Peter Obi paid tribute in a Twitter post. “His role in using journalism -his profession of choice -in advancing Nigeria’s independence struggle is well recorded and regarded. His famous book, “How to be a Nigerian” placed our country in the historic and literary limelight.”
“He was a great advocate and crusader for democracy and good governance, who consistently decried military anti-politics in Nigeria. He will be sorely missed. While praying for the repose of his soul, I also pray for his family to have the fortitude to bear this huge loss.” Obi added.
