Jesus Christ more Powerful than Ifa
Afrobeat star Seun Kuti forced to accept Jesus Christ after his Ifa philosophy was rejected by cell mates he now leads prayer and worship sessions in jail
Beleaguered Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti was forced to accept Jesus Christ and abandon his Ifa beliefs following his detention at the Nigerian Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) holding pens. He is being detained on court orders for assaulting a police officer on a busy Lagos bridge in the nations’s commercial capital.
According to reports and sources his first night in a police cell will always be fond memories for him as it was his first time. He expected to be treated like a king by his cellmates but was forced to munch humble pie when his cellmates rejected him. Kuti had hoped on his star power and the fact he was the youngest son of the late Afrobeat maestro Fela Anikulapo Kuti who was no stranger to police cells as his late father had been charged with marijuana possession to murder.
Even kings are humbled in police cells because it is believed if you were that powerful you will be at home. The incumbent king of the cell refused to give up his position and told the star to remain standing. Seun Kuti known for his combative personality and having his way was told to behave. This lead to a shouting match and banging on the cell door.

When the upheaval in the cell ignored by the police guards became unbearable, Kuti had to submit to cell authority. Negotiating in both Yoruba and pidgin English he paid N25,000 about $30 to be able to get a space in the congested cell. He had to plead with police to allow him call his wife to bring the money.

After he paid, Kuti was given his corner to sit on the hard concrete floor of the cell surrounded by unwashed bodies. Incensed over his ordeal and display of “power show” by the cell king and his subjects he refused to eat for a day and a half including the delicious meals brought by his wife which the other suspected criminals happily consumed.
The highlight of his detention was when the inmates rejected his Ifa philosophy espoused by his late father and forced him to lead the prayer and worship sessions in the cell. A Bible was handed to him and told he must be with it at all times.
Kuti was glimpsed around 2:30 pm, Friday gripping the Bible tightly with his left hand while climbing the stairs leading to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge, Waheed Ayilara. He was later led down the stairs, back into the cell.
Sources said those who have visited the embattled singer included his elder brother, Femi who is currently touring in Europe and other family members as well as his lawyers and some friends.
Meanwhile, the Chief Magistrate Court, Sabo, Yaba has granted an application for an extension of Kuti’s remand for additional four days to allow further investigation into the case.
The Chief Magistrate, Adeola Olatubosun, extended Kuti’s remand until May 22 following an application moved by Simon Lough, SAN, who led a police legal team to the court.
