Nigerian Defence HQ dares Ijaw leader Asari Dokubo who accused the military of stealing crude oil to provide names of culprits
Dokubo advises President Tinubu not to release the Igbo separatist leader
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ), on Friday denied the allegation of the Ijaw leader Asari Dokubo that the military was pilfering oil from Dokubo’s home state of oil rich Rivers.
Dokubo, 59, made the allegation following a closed door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday.
“The military is at the centre of oil theft, and we have to make this very clear to the Nigerian public that 99 per cent of oil theft can be traced to the Nigerian military, the Army and the Navy especially,” Dokubo a former separatist leader said in the press briefing following his secret discussions with Tinubu.
Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan Nigerian Navy (NN) refuted Dokubo’s claim saying, operations by the service saved the country from losing N71bn to oil thieves as of June 2.
“Also, it is allegedly stolen from offshore at sea. We have been fighting crude oil theft taking it to the creeks. If Dokubo is claiming that there is a cabal of military personnel involved in oil theft, let him bring their names.” Ayo-Vaughan stated.
His Army counterpart, Brig. Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, echoed the NN sentiment. “The Nigerian Army has zero tolerance for any compromise on the part of our troops and will not condone such acts of economic sabotage. No black sheep will be spared if identified, ” adding that they had conducted several successful operations to curb oil theft in the country.
Dokubo also disclosed that during his hour long closed door session which centred on combating oil theft in the oil rich Niger Delta in south east Nigeria, also advised the Nigerian president not to release the separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu, head of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who is currently in Department of State Security (DSS) custody.
“Releasing Nnamdi Kanu is rewarding criminality and rewarding gruesome murder of innocent people,” he said at the. “He should face the law for the actions and instigations he has carried out.
“On security, I want to clearly say that there are full-scale wars going on in different parts of this country. In the South East, the IPOB/ESN is waging a full-scale war against the government of this country and many local governments, many communities are deserted, schools are closed, and hospitals are closed,” he added.
