Nigerian President fires service and police chiefs appoints kinsmen and political allies as replacements

Presidential protection unit chief also sacked

Embattled Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday, fired the service and police chiefs including the commanding officer of the Guards Brigade responsible for the personal protection of the president.

The firings comes ahead of a planned Paris visit on Thursday, where he would meet World Bank and IMF officials in a bid to get fresh loans to settle workers demands following the uproar of removing fuel subsidy and threat of a nationwide strike by the organised labour that could bring down his government.

Director of Information, Office of the Secretary-General to the Federation, Willie Bassey, signed the presidential statement announcing the sackings.

Those whose appointments were terminated, are Chief of Defence Staff, Lucky Irabor; the Chief of Army Staff, Farouk Yahaya; the Chief of Naval Staff, Awwal Gambo; the Chief of Air Staff, Isiaka Amao, and the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba.

According to another statement from the office of the secretary to the government of the federation (OSGF), also announced the upgrade of Nuhu Ribadu as National Security Adviser (NSA). Last week, Ribadu was appointed the Special Adviser on Security (SAS).

The Nigerian security situation remains perilous with the military stretched combating an Islamic insurgency in Vice President Kassim Shettima home state of Borno in north east Nigeria. While banditry and kidnappings for ransom has become a national phenomenon. An Amnesty International and independent observers’ reports stated that more than 200 Nigerians have been killed due to violence since Tinubu’s inauguration.

Those appointed are as follows. Nuhu Ribadu – National Security Adviser
2 Maj. Gen. C.G Musa – Chief of Defence Staff
3 Maj. T. A Lagbaja – Chief of Army Staff
4 Rear Admirral E. A Ogalla – Chief of Naval Staff
5 AVM H.B Abubakar – Chief of Air Staff
6 DIG Kayode Egbetokun – Acting Inspector-General of Police
7 Maj. Gen. EPA Undiandeye – Chief of Defense Intelligence

Adeniyi Bashir Adewale as the Acting Comptroller General of Customs was appointed by Tinubu while his former Chief Security Officer while he was governor of Lagos state DIG Egbetokun Olukayode as the acting Inspector General of Police.

The Brigade of Guards commander and sub unit commanders was replaced by Tinubu’s kinsmen and political allies from the Hausa tribe.

5 Lt. Col. Olumide A. Akingbesote – 176 Guards Battalion, Gwagwalada, Abuja

Key military aides at the Presidential Villa were also appointed.

Maj. Isa Farouk Audu – (N/14695) Commanding Officer State House Artillery
2 Capt. Kazeem Olalekan Sunmonu (N/16183) – Second-in-Command, State House Artillery
3 Maj. Kamaru Koyejo Hamzat (N/14656) – Commanding Officer, State House Military Intelligence
4 Maj. TS Adeola (N/12860) – Commanding Officer, State House Armament
5 Lt. A. Aminu (N/18578) – Second-in-Command, State House Armament

He also approved the appointments of two additional Special Advisers, and two Senior Assistants, namely:

1 Hadiza Bala Usman Special Adviser, Policy Coordination
2 Hannatu Musa Musawa – Special Adviser, Culture and Entertainment Economy
3 Sen. Abdullahi Abubakar Gumel – Senior Special Assistant, National Assembly Matters (Senate)
4 Hon. (Barr) Olarewaju Kunle – Ibrahim Senior Special Assistant, National Assembly Matters (House of Representatives)

The OSGF statement added that, “It is to be noted that the appointed Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police and the Comptroller General of Customs are to act in their positions, pending their confirmation in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
