Afrobeats star Burna Boy confirmed as king of the genre after clinching his fourth BET award in a star studded ceremony

The BET Awards an American award show that was established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television to celebrate black entertainers and other minorities in music, film, sports and philanthropy gave Nigeria’s Afrobeats star Burna Boy his fourth award.

The 2023 edition of the BET Awards took place Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

The evening celebrated hip-hop’s 50th anniversary and featured a tribute performance to the late Tina Turner.

Burna Boy (real name  Damini Ogulu), won the award for Best International Act.

The ‘African Giant’ singer beat the likes of Ayra Starr, Central Cee and Stormzy, among others to clinch the most coveted category of BET awards.

Though Burna Boy was absent at the show, his announcement as the winner received resounding applause. His mother Bose Ogulu, picked up the award on his behalf as he was attending Christian Louboutin Men Spring/Summer 2024 collection presentation and Astroloubi Party in Paris, France.

His 2022 album ‘Love, Damini’ was a global success, and he already took home a BET Award in the same category in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Other nominees in the category included Aya Nakamura, Ayra Starr, Central Cee, Ella Mai, K.O, L7nnon, Stormzy, Tiakola and Uncle Waffles.

Other Nigerian Afrobeats stars Tems picked up a collaboration BET while Davido delivered a sizzling performance entertaining the titans of Black music.

Rap legends such as KRS1, Big Daddy, and Fat Joe were also on stage with memorable performances.
