Nigeria’s main opposition party the Labour Party (LP) has confronted the Tinubu administration for discrediting the European Union (EU) final report on the 2023 General Election.

A statement by the LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said the LP “stands by the position of the EU observation mission, stressing that it has “always said that this election was massively rigged in favour of the APC and their candidate”.

The ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu was declared winner of the fractious election.

The EU had in its final assessment and report on the 2023 general elections, declared that there were massive irregularities in the last elections.

The damning report concluded that trust in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was broken and there is the likelihood that there will be scant voting in 2027.

In a statement issued on Sunday by Dele Alake, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Special Duties, described the conclusions of the EU Electoral Observer Mission as “jaundiced”.

The FG rejected the EU’s submission on the election, asking them to be “objective in all their assessments of internal affairs”.

It can be recalled that the EU gave €39 million euros (N18 billion) for the conduct of a transparent, credible and inclusive 2023 general elections.

The LP, which is currently challenging the outcome of the poll in court, said the FG’s move to reject the EU report was medicine after death.

“We are only hoping that the judiciary will dispense justice without fear or favour in the interest of the nation and posterity.” Ifoh stated.

“Nigerians already know the true winner of the 2023 presidential election and no amount of slandering, denial, or rebuttal can change the fact that the party in power has no mandate of the electorate”, the statement added.
