Sit at Home

Economic activities grind to a halt in Nigeria’s restive south east following a Biafran Republic Government in Exile call for a one week sit at home civil disobedience

Business and shops in the Nigeria’s restive south east region are currently closed following a directive by the Biafran Government in Exile (BRGIE) demanding the Federal Government (FGN) to release Nnamdi Kanu the leader of the region’s separatist group, the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) unconditionally.

Finland based self styled Prime Minister of BRIGIE, Simon Ekpa made the directive in a circular distributed on social media, Sunday, claiming the “sit at home” civil disobedience action was to pressure the FGN to grant the Igbo ethnic group their own independent homeland.

“The Biafra Republic Government In-Exile (BRGIE) and Biafra De Facto Government-In-Homeland wish to notify Biafrans that there will be sit-at-home civil disobedience starting from 3rd July 2023 to 10th July 2023,” he wrote.

“Demand the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who remains illegally detained at the DSS dungeon;

“In preparation for Biafra’s self-referendum;

“To further put the world on notice that Biafrans are taking their future into their own hands;

“To demonstrate that the Biafra Republic Government In Exile remains the only legitimate government to whom the Biafran people listen and are loyal;

“To invalidate the illegitimacy of those who parade themselves as Nigeria’s representatives within the Biafran territory.

The socio political and economic pressure group representing the Igbo ethnic group,  Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide urged residents of South-East to ignore Mr Simon Ekpa’s declaration of a one-week sit-at-home in the zone.

Several other groups, individuals and state governments have also condemned the sit-at-home, lamenting the loss of billions of Naira in loss productivity and business.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo said, “We have always made it clear that Simon Ekpa is not fighting for Biafra; he is only using the name of Biafra to enrich himself.

“He is also not interested in having Mazi Nnamdi Kanu released because he knows any day Kanu is released, his business will end.

“So, he goes ahead taking decisions, issuing orders that would lead to the prolonged detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“One of such is his senseless and unjustified sit-at-home orders. How could you ask the breadwinner of a home to sit-at-home for one week and watch himself and his family members starve to death? It is utterly senseless.

“It is even more deceitful considering that the person issuing the order is in far away Finland enjoying himself.

“Ndigbo should, therefore, not take him seriously; come out and go about your normal business. There is no sit-at-home anywhere.”
