Nigerian private school administrator discloses she spent millions of Naira bribing government officials to allow her school operate after exam scandal

An audio recording of a Nigerian private school administrator in which she reveals how she spent millions of Naira bribing Lagos state government officials to allow her school operate, leaked on the internet, Saturday.

Students writing examinations bribes are paid so that government officials look the other way

The school, Tenderland College based in Nigeria’s commercial capital was embroiled in a West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations (NECO) scandal in 2022. According to the regulations of the exam bodies WAEC, NECO and Lagos State Ministry of Education any school caught in examination malpractice will be shut down and not allowed to write any examinations again.

This organisation as part of its investigation into exam malpractice contacted the WAEC and NECO registrars with their findings.

Despite the report Tenderland College was allowed to conduct the 2023 WAEC and NECO exams.

The Audio in which the administrator stated she paid bribes to Lagos state government officials

In the leaked audio tape the administrator revealed that she had to bribe Lagos state officials to avoid closure of the school after a family member reported ongoing exam malpractice to the media.

The school administrator identified as Egwono Ovabor Omoijiade spoke in pidgin English.

“Before the WAEC start. (Money collected from WAEC registration of external candidates and for “assistance” during the exam which is illegal) We don use am support salary of teachers.” She explained.

“That Majemite matter (Referring to the family member that leaked the school’s misconduct to the media) na so so bribe bribe. If to say we no get issue wey involve going to Alausa (Lagos State Ministry of Education) if you are going to Alausa you do not go with empty hand.” She stressed.

“You dey go Alausa wetin you wan go speak for there? English? Abi dem no read English abi dem no read Masters? Abi Ph.d wetin you wan come speak for there?” Ovabor Omojiade asked.

“As we talk talk finish. Ahbeg make you no vex…..Take this envelope.” She continued. The envelope containing huge amounts of cash will persuade the corrupt civil servant from doing the right thing.

Lagos State Government, WAEC and NECO officials could not be reached for comments about the alleged corruption in the Lagos state ministry of education.
