Nigerian opposition leader Peter Obi looking forward to 2027 tells supporters that the journey to a new Nigeria would be a tough marathon

Nigerian opposition leader Peter Obi in a X message Saturday, his first since the September 6 Presidential Elections Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) ruling striking out his appeal, called on his supporters to not despair over the decision.

Last Wednesday, in an unanimous decision the PEPT confirmed the victory of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate Bola Tinubu in the February presidential election, whose result Obi disputes.

“Since the Tribunal verdict, there has been a note of general despair among the Obidients and the generality of our supporters. I assure you all that on this journey, despair or surrender is not in our options.” The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate wrote on the micro blogging site.

He noted the general disappointment that heralded the court verdict following expectation that the February 25th would usher in the Nigeria of their dreams. The dreams have been deferred for now but remains alive for all time. Obi stated.

In a nod to a long struggle and eyes towards presidential elections in 2027 he told supporters “Nothing good in life comes easy. Throughout history, positive changes come only with sacrifices, perseverance, resilience and fluctuating fortunes.”

Obi further implored supporters to keep hope alive because he had warned at the onset of the presidential campaign that the “journey upon which we were about to embark was not a short sprint, but a long and tough marathon. It was always going to be difficult, painful and excruciating.”

“I am inspired that we have endured the odds placed in our way at every point. In such a short space of time, we have persevered to get to the point where we cannot be ignored any longer. Therefore, I urge you to abide and never think of giving up.” He reminded supporters of how far they have come in birthing the “new Nigeria” which ” an entrenched and formidable” cabal has truncated.

“I wish to assure you that our recent disappointments have inspired me to re-dedicate myself to the cause of building a New Nigeria. For me, rescuing Nigeria is a lifelong commitment, and on this journey, we shall be resolute but orderly, principled but lawful.” he said alerting supporters to the possibility that the Supreme Court will affirm the lower court’s decision and supporters must respect the law if it happens.

By re-dedicating himself to the struggle the LP presidential candidate signalled that he will be contesting for president again in 2027.

“I assure you that we shall persist with even greater determination and zeal until we get to our destination. Nigeria must belong to all Nigerians and not to a select few.” he stressed.
