Moscow confiscates Europe’s largest nuclear plant making it a Russian state asset

Embattled Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the countries of the collective West should be proactive and deliver a preventive nuclear strike on the territory of the Russian Federation. In what he calls a strategic victory for the West. Zelensky made the call during an online conference at the Lowy Institute think tank in Australia, Thursday via video link from Kiev.

“What should NATO do? Eliminate the possibility of Russia using nuclear weapons. But what is important, I once again appeal to the international community, as it was before February 24: pre-emptive strikes, so that the Russians know what will happen to them if they are used. And not vice versa – wait for Russia’s nuclear strikes, so that later you can say: “Oh, you are so, well, keep it from us,” the Ukrainian leader said.

“Because of the Ukrainian conflict, not only Europe suffers, but all the continents, including Australia. One should not speculate about the likelihood of a negotiation process with Russia.” Zelensky stressed that he sees no possibility for a peaceful solution to the conflict and considers it necessary to “inflict a military defeat on the Russian side.”

The Kremlin responded to Zelensky’s statement saying the Ukrainian leader was calling for “world war.”

“Vladimir Zelensky’s statement about a preemptive strike against Russia essentially means a call for the start of a world war,” presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

According to him, in the event of a conflict, the consequences will be monstrous and unpredictable. The spokesman noted that all countries, especially the United States , Great Britain and members of the European Union , should pay attention to the statements of the President of Ukraine. He stressed that such statements should not be left without a reaction from the world community.

Zelensky address to the Lowy Institute comes on the heels of President Vladimir Putin signing the accession of four former regions of eastern Ukraine into the Russian Federation after it was ratified by the State Duma.

Russia has also taken control of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant and a decree signed by Putin put the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) facilities on the list of Russian federal assets.

“The Russian government shall take measures to establish federal ownership of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant and other facilities necessary for its operation,” reads the decree published on Wednesday.

Putin also instructed the government to establish the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant federal state unitary company to ensure security of its assets.

The decree also sets the operator’s status of the nuclear power plant. “To grant the joint-stock company the Operator of the Zaporozhye NPP the status of an organization with operations in the area of nuclear energy, which, using its own capabilities or enlisting the support of other organizations, shall engage in activities to operate or cease operation of nuclear facilities at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant,” the decree said.

Permits issued to the nuclear power plant and its employees before September 30 will continue to be in effect until new ones are issued under Russian laws.

Ex-chief engineer of the Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant Oleg Romanenko would head the operating company of the Zaporozhye NPP, Rosenergoatom Company said on Wednesday.
